Time Decay, Explained Simply
The melting ice cube
Every option is like an ice cube. Part of it is real (intrinsic value) and part is 'hope' (time value).
The hope part melts every single day — weekends included — until it's gone at expiration.
At expiration only the real part remains. An out-of-the-money option has no real part, so it melts to $0.
Key idea
Time value always goes to zero at expiration. Always.
